Why your phone gets hot when you play, and what helps

March 5, 2026 · Marta Kowalczyk

If your phone turns into a hand warmer during games, you're not imagining it. Demanding 3D games push the processor hard, and heat is the direct result of that effort.

The frustrating part is that heat makes things worse. Once a phone gets too warm, it throttles itself to cool down, so your smooth game suddenly stutters. That's the phone protecting itself, not a bug.

A few things genuinely help. Take the case off during long sessions, since most cases trap heat. Avoid playing while charging if you can, because charging generates its own heat on top of the game. And lower the graphics or framerate if the game lets you.

I've also learned to just take breaks. Ten minutes off lets the phone recover, and honestly my thumbs appreciate it too. Playing in a cool room instead of direct sunlight makes a bigger difference than people expect.

None of this means you have to baby your phone forever. But if a specific game runs hot every single time, that's worth noting, and it's something we always flag in our reviews.
